One of the most important decisions we make is how to fund an increasingly long retirement. When Social Security was launched in the 1930s, average life expectancy was less than the age of eligibility. Nearly 90 years later, many Americans will live two decades or more past the earliest eligibility age of 62.

The question is, will you outlive your money…and what to do about it if you think you might?

The answer, of course, depends not only on how long you live, but how much you have and  where you’ll spend it.

Visual Capitalist offers an intriguing state by state graphic of how long $1 million in retirement benefits plus Social Security will last in retirement.   If you retire to Hawaii,  you have 12 years until you’re broke.   If you move to West Virginia, you can have an 89-year retirement.
