Next week I’ll be sharing my annual Commencement Sampler with well intentioned (regardless of whether well received) advice for the generations starting college or graduating and hitting the workforce. But before I so, I’d like to share some concerns, in my opinion well founded, from NYU professor and entrepreneur Scott Galloway in his recent TED Talk.
We should remember that the kids who are graduating from college this month amidst campus protests probably had virtually graduations in 2020 in the midst of Covid. They are entering a very polarized adult culture in the US (and perhaps elsewhere)….and according to Dr. Galloway, the boomers have, albeit perhaps unintentionally, put or neglected to remove, some significant obstacles in their way while creating a world of advantages for themselves.
Dr. Galloway recently delivered a powerful 18-minute TED talk that has already garnered 4 million views since it was presented late last month. You may not agree, but Galloway is an expert presenter and unlike many of us when making big claims, he brings logic and data to his talks. Check out “How the US is Destroying Young People’s Future.”
(Note: I’m mindful that this post may appear to be a bit incongruous appearing in the same issue that celebrates Mother’s Day. I’m sure that Boomer parents have been very focused on the welfare and development of their children, perhaps to a fault at times. But it may well be that while doing so we neglected working on the world they would inherit so they would enjoy the same opportunities and potential outcomes we enjoyed. To that end, we may have work yet to do and I therefore feel its inclusion today is appropriate…and I hope you do as well).
