On this day, June 25 in the year 1876 General George Armstrong Custer led more than 260 US Cavalry to their deaths at the hands of a vastly superior Native American force. If the General could be channeled today, what lessons might he have learned from the debacle that would serve other leaders?

Obviously we can’t know what Custer might share, but Vistage Speaker and Leadership historian Greg Bustin has studied this debacle and offers some suggestions in the form of a short blog post from the Vistage website “How Leaders Decide: Three lessons to learn from one of U.S. history’s bloodiest days.” (I like to think that if Custer had a Vistage group, he might have made other choices.)

If you’d like a short but well written book that summarizes great leadership lessons through history in 2 to 3 page narratives check out Mr. Bustin’s “How Leaders Decide:  A Timeless Guide to Making Tougher Choices.”. Highly recommended!
