Most of us are at least vaguely area of the Renaissance philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli, best known as the father of political science, whose name has become a synonym for power and its abuse in the worlds of politics and business. His book “The Prince” is still widely read and most have heard his famous observation that ‘It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.”
Since his time, many organizations have, sadly, been governed by this rule, but in a hopefully more enlightened world where a seller’s market for labor prevails, management may want to think twice about whether Machiavelli’ s advice is still practical.
