I shared my annual Commencement Sampler for new grads last week, but an important entry just showed up today. One of the contributors to this year’s sampler was Dr. Scott Galloway (The Algebra of Wealth/Algebra of Life). At the risk of overexposure for Dr. Galloway, the newest post to his “No Mercy, No Malice” blog should be shared with the young people in your life.
Dr. Galloway says to the youth of America (and the rest of us) in the first paragraph of his post “America, and the Western alliance it leads, is dysfunctional. It’s also less dysfunctional than any other society.
Why?
America’s alchemy of individualism, rights, education, innovation, capital, diversity, entrepreneurship, and generosity creates a substance found elsewhere but not at this potency. I spend a great deal of time digesting data and media. And there’s a fissure between them. The data reflects a cold but comforting truth:
The hand you’ve been dealt is better than you’ve been told.”
Young people in the “real world” face new choices, and Dr. Galloway notes “What ultimately dictates your success relative to your environment is the choice you make to walk, and the resilience you find to keep moving. In a word, agency.”
Dr. Galloway’s post on “Agency,” should be required reading for every new grad.
