A friend of mine once said, half-jokingly, that CEO should be short for the “Change Everything Officer”. What he meant was that most people resist change and the core of leadership is to create environments that are safe but not always comfortable so that the company can change to the non-negotiable demand of their marketplaces. Much of leadership is top down, but when it comes to AI, change is coming from the bottom up.
AI is rapidly moving from competitive advantage to “table stakes” as they say in poker; what’s required to simply be in the game. Smply put, company AI competence is the price of admission to the completive arena. Vistage’s Chief Research Office Joe Galvin Explains in a recent short INC Magazine article Mr. Galvin “AI isn’t waiting for organizations to catch up. Many workers are already using it to transform how they work, often without their employers knowing. (emphasis, mine) In fact, a 2024 joint report from LinkedIn and Microsoft found that 52 percent of workers who use AI on the job are reluctant to admit to using it.
Take a few minutes for Mr. Galvin’s excellent recent one page article “AI is Changing Work Forever- and Employees are Leading the Way.“ Then, when you go to work tomorrow, why not find out just how much of a difference AI is making in your organization, often unbeknownst to you!
Note: In the article, Mr. Galvin references report on the Vistage site: “Generative AI: Automating the Knowledge Worker.” (This one is available to non- members).
